BANGALORE: Many autorickshaws may be off the roads in the city on Thursday. The Auto Drivers Joint Front, representing Bangalore Auto Drivers' Association, Janashraya Auto and Taxi Drivers Union, Self Employed Auto Drivers' Association, Praja Seva Auto Drivers Association and Karnataka Rajadhani Auto and Taxi Drivers' Association has called for a one-day strike. The leaders of these unions demanded that the Government take more responsibility for enabling autorickshaws to switch over to LPG and provide insurance for those vehicles fitted with gas kits, in the event of accidents caused by explosion of cylinders. Though the Government pays gas conversion kit fitting centres Rs. 2,000 for a kit, some centres are misusing this and refusing to let autorickshaw owners or drivers get the benefit. The Government should instead route the payment through autorickshaw drivers, they said. They wanted the government to start a scheme for women to become self-employed by driving autos.
