Unique feat

During a test match in Australia, TV commentator, Richie Benaud, was the first one to notice Roger Binny's unique style of run-up and delivery.

He pointed out that, at the time, the ball leaves Binny's fingers, his right foot, anchored on the ground would be pointing backward, instead of forward - a feat only a boneless wonder could duplicate. Slow motion replays focussing on Binny's right foot prove Benaud right.

Prepaid service

This is to bring to your attention the woes of customers like me who go to BSNL Customer Care Office in Bharathi Park Road, Coimbatore, every month.

For the last 10 months, I make regular visits to the customer care centre asking the same question "when are you starting Excel prepaid service" and the answer I have received is "next month".

While Excel prepaid is available in Kerala and other cities such as Madurai / Trichy, why is it so difficult to get Excel prepaid in Coimbatore.

Merciless job

It is unfortunate that the Public Works Department authorities have removed trees around the Ukkadam tank, while the NGO's are toiling hard towards a green Coimbatore.

The Electricity Board is authorised only to prune the branches that touch the power lines; but they mercilessly cut down young trees down the trunk. The EB has provided its workers with vehicles fitted with adjustable ladders, but the workers prefer to do an easy job. Of the 750 trees we have planted in Ramnagar, the Board has killed 15 per cent. I appeal to the Board to do their duty with a touch of commitment to the city's cause.

Compost yard

Vadavalli panchayat is proposing to set up a compost yard right at the middle of Indra Nagar with a resident strength of nearly 1,500 people. They do not have public toilets. And these people have used all the vacant plots of Chinmaya Nagar and areas in between Sakthi Nagar and Chinmaya Nagar for night soiling.

If the president of Vadavalli panchayat can first look into this long pending necessity of the Indra Nagar occupants it will be quite good.

The composite yard can be conveniently located near Bommannempalayam panchayat crematorium where it is sparsely populated.

Indecent advertising

I would like to bring to your notice an indecent hoarding of a condom on Coimbatore-Palakkad National Highway near the junction of Palakkad Road and Kovaipudur Pirivu. Kovaipudur is a township having two arts colleges, one polytechnic, one Girls Higher Secondary School, one CBSE school and one Engineering college. Kovaipudur comes under the jurisdiction of Kuniamuthur Municipality. All the educational institutions are co-educational. This Pirivu is a major junction. When students wait for bus, they can a huge hoarding marketing condom.

This can divert the young minds. In the interest of the young generation, I request the authorities to take necessary action to remove it from this spot.

Malaria fever

On our street, there are many school students suffering from malarial fever. There are many educated adults who never turn to this problem. The authorities concerned should kindly help us to overcome this situation. Please guide us on what should we do.

Corporal punishment

Cases of corporal punishment inflicted on children in schools are reported now and then. Often such punishments are severe and lead to physical impairment. They do more harm than good. Education authorities could issue instructions to teachers to avoid corporal punishments and to be judicious in correcting erring students.

Shabby treatment

About an year ago a national telephone company handled me shabbily for no mistake of mine and even after a long period they are yet to redress the complaints I have made to them at all levels of their hierarchy.

I only wish its time that we consumers are not bullied and fooled around with by these so called big corporate companies that talk big about customer service.

Mushroom fry?

`Pani puri' cart vendors start their business at dusk on wayside streets. They sell food items with different names to the public. Popular among them is the `mushroom fry'. Public have an irresistible desire to consume this. They think this product is made out of fresh `mushroom'. But cabbage is what is used, as I happened to watch it once. This is nothing but cheating the public and is unlawful.

Public should think twice before going in for such unhygienic items. The health authorities should also take action.

Disservice

I am an SBI credit cardholder for the past four years. The usage of the card is so limited than the limit allotted to me. I was called over phone by a customer care executive, to my office at Coimbatore from New Delhi, informing me that I can have a newly introduced insurance policy, since I was one among the cardholders having a clear transaction record. Since I am selected from the list, he wanted my concurrence over phone itself. Though he had explained the details of the policy, I refused to give my concurrence for just a call made to me from New Delhi. After half an hour, I received another call from another executive, informing me that the voice of mine is being recorded for the acceptance of the policy. I again refused and requested for the recording of my answer. I understand that there is a ban on inviting persons over phone and to make such sort of canvassing for the schemes introduced.

Is that not to be maintained by everybody? That too without seeing the person? Is it correct to force a cardholder to accept anything they tell?

Humane gesture

The initiative taken by the Principal, Government Arts College, Udhagamandalm, and his team of lecturers deserves praise. It is a great service to the needy students ( The Hindu , dated September 15).

I am sure that the readers of The Hindu would come forward to help the Principal in this effort and also to see if such a need is there in any other college or school. I myself have seen that in several schools in Coimbatore, students coming from poor families do not take food during lunchtime and take water alone.

The school managements and philanthropists should address this issue.

At the mercy of cable TV operators

The monthly rates charged by cable TV operators have been increasing while the quality of service has been deteriorating. They decide the channels for telecast. Small operators join hands to expand the area of coverage and shift the dish to a far off place.

My operator has refused to provide news channels such as BBC, CNN, 24 x7 and even DD news. No receipt is being issued for the cash he collects as monthly subscription. There is an urgent necessity to introduce some legislation to bring in discipline. A system of licensing needs to be introduced.

Provide infrastructure

No town in Tamil Nadu has registered such a phenomenal growth in the last five decades as Tirupur. The population of the town, which was 50,000 in 1951, has risen 12 times and may cross the million mark in 2011. The flourishing knit-garments trade sees an export of Rs. 2 crores annually.

The town is one of the topmost foreign exchange earners in our country.

It is time that the Government drew up a master plan to provide necessary infrastructure, which is woefully inadequate at present.

The Municipality should be upgraded as a Corporation. The Government should also consider forming a separate district carved out of Coimbatore and Erode districts with Tirupur as headquarters.

Give publicity

The Southern Railway has announced 388 special trains to clear festival rush, which commences from Ayudha Pooja and ends with Diwali. Earlier, during occasions such as Tiruthani car festival, special trains were run for a day and publicity was given through press and posters. But of late, trains are run (empty) without adequate publicity/ announcement.

Hence commuters throng particular trains (say for Chennai, Blue Mountain, Kovai Express etc). The Railways, while introducing special trains, should display posters at railway station ticket counters and use the online screen, publicise through press, AIR, television channels including DD and above all instruct the counter staff to inform the public to give details of alternative trains.

In many places such as Chennai Central and Coimbatore, we find people waiting in serpentine queues for two hours to book a single ticket.

This results in colossal waste of manhours.

It will be immensely useful if more counters are opened without delay.

Family cards

In recent times, the Civil Supplies authorities have issued press releases with a view to streamlining the supply of rice, kerosene and sugar under PDS and to give proper guidance to family cardholders on matters such as renewal of the old cards.

The latest one in the series is regarding getting an endorsement on the card from the LPG distributors about the number of gas cylinders used by the cardholders.

The intention is the elimination of the chances of an LPG user getting kerosene supplied under PDS.

This being a blanket order covering all cardholders, even those who have opted for a `No Items required' `N' category card have to, unnecessarily, make a beeline to PDS outlets for getting the needless endorsements.

It will be a real help to such cardholders, most of whom are aged, if a clarification, exempting them from getting the endorsement, is issued immediately through appropriate press notification.
