Training centre for health services staff

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A regional training centre for health services staff is being set up in Thripunithura for conducting training for those from the six districts in the region: Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki.

Induction training for doctors for administrative work, training for various programmes under reproductive and child health schemes and modernisation of Government programme, nurses training and so on are to be taken up by the centre.

A regional centre was much needed as most of the training was held in Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode, said P.K. Sivaraman, District Medical Officer (DMO).

Unused building

Importantly, an unused Government building and land would be properly utilised too. The building, with an area of about 6,000 square feet on an acre of land, had been lying largely unused, but for the occasional training.

The centre had room to lodge 60 people, along with a kitchen.

The training centre would have some new postings too with a Principal and some staff assuming charge.

The building was set up for the training of junior public health inspectors, a post which no longer existed.

A year-and-a-half course, held earlier for these personnel, was stopped about eight years ago. Since then, the building had been lying unutilised.

Shifting the office of the DMO from its present premises had been on the cards for long now. It was likely that the space occupied by the Cooperative Medical College in the Government hospital would be turned into the office of the DMO.

At present, the DMO's office was occupying part of the nursing school, hindering its development too.

The office building was old and dingy with little room for proper storage of files or even for accommodating all the personnel.
