KOCHI: C.M. Joseph, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Koovappady, has been suspended from service on the charge of dereliction of election duty. The suspension order was issued on Monday, after District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, who is the District Electoral Officer, inspected the Koovappady Block Office. The inspection was conducted following complaints about Mr. Joseph's conduct during the polling days. The election-related duties of Koovappady Block Panchayat has been handed over to Shobhana Kumari, District Women's Welfare Officer. The charge of the BDO has been temporarily handed over to the Village Extension Officer Thankappan. Ashalatha, Lecturer, Department of English at Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, against whom the Collector had issued an arrest warrant for unauthorised absence from polling duties, surrendered on Monday. She gave a declaration that she had gone to Thiruvananthapuram for getting medical treatment and produced a medical certificate.
