Smoke in train leads to panic

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 55-year-old railway commuter was injured when he jumped out of the 6334 Thiruvananthapuram-Veeraval Express after seeing smoke billow out of the general coach near Kazhakkuttom railway station around 3.30 p.m. on Monday.

The injured has been identified as Ramachandran of Chavara. He was rushed to Medical College Hospital with fractures in the left leg. The Railway authorities had to use fire extinguishers to douse the smoke in the general coach, which created panic. According to a Railway spokesman, the incident occurred due to "brake-binding." Railway sources said the incident might have occurred owing to the failure to fully release the fibre brake after the air test conducted at the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station. The train, which was detained at the station at 3.40 p.m., left at 3.58 p.m. after the defect was rectified.
