Cop held on extortion charge

Devesh K. Pandey

Threatened innocent people to book them in false cases

  • Planted a knife in the car of the unsuspecting victim through a accomplice
  • Demanded an amount of Rs. 80,000 or threatened to book him under Arms Act

NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police constable who allegedly extorted money from innocent people on the pretext of saving them from being booked under various charges was arrested at Prashant Vihar in North-West Delhi this past Thursday. His partner in crime, an area resident, has also been arrested.

Senior police officers came to know about the constable's alleged activities when the father of one of his victims, Rumi Chauhan, lodged a complaint narrating how he was trapped and made to cough up Rs. 22,000.

The victim is a resident of Rohini Sector-13 and his father is a contractor. A few months ago, Rumi came across one Bhura who became friends with him during subsequent meetings. One day while they were going to some place, a constable intercepted their vehicle on the pretext of conducting a routine check. The constable, later identified as Anand, purportedly recovered a knife from the vehicle and then threatened to book them both under the Arms Act.

While Rumi was shocked over the recovery of a knife from the vehicle, Bhura immediately began negotiating with Anand, the constable with the Special Staff of the North-West Delhi. To hush up the case, the constable demanded Rs. 80,000.

Rumi expressed his inability to pay up the amount, but Bhura readily agreed to pay. He also asked Rumi to do the same if he wanted to escape further harassment. The constable asked him to arrange the money soon.

It is learnt that Rumi somehow arranged Rs. 22,000 and handed it over to the constable. But, the policeman and Bhura kept pestering him to pay up the rest of the amount.

Unable to arrange more money, Rumi finally broke down before his father and narrated the entire episode, after which the matter was reported to the police.

Taking it to be a serious case, senior police officers got a case of extortion registered after which Anand, who was earlier with the Special Cell, was arrested. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to having extorted money from Rumi in connivance with Bhura, who has also been arrested. The police learnt that the accused trapped sons of rich businessmen using the same modus operandi.

Further probe into their other suspected involvements is on.
