Sainik Farms' illegal houses razed

More houses to be demolished as anti-encroachment drive likely to continue

MCD DRIVE: Workers demolishing illegal constructions at Sainik Farms on Monday.

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's demolition squad on Monday razed four more illegal houses at Sainik Farms in South Delhi that had allegedly come up in violation of the Delhi High Court order of 2001 banning construction work in the area.

After demolishing four houses in the same area last week, the MCD squad resumed its anti-encroachment drive that is likely to continue for a few more days as some more illegal houses and bungalows will be demolished for violating the court order.

However, residents of the area have termed the entire drive as a mere eyewash aimed at evading the court's wrath as its order banning construction at Sainik Farms is being openly flouted everyday. Residents allege that it was due to the nexus between the local MCD officials and police that unauthorised constructions were going on in the area unabatedly.

Residents point out that in its order in 2001, the Delhi High Court had directed that no construction should be allowed in the area where it has even banned entry of building material. Subsequently, the civic body had set up check-posts at all entry and exit points at Sainik Farms.

"But despite this, illegal constructions have continued in the area unabatedly and several new houses and bungalows have come up. The MCD employees deployed at these check posts take Rs.500 per entry of truck, while the civic body engineers are also being bribed for allowing construction," said a resident whose property was demolished in Monday's drive.

Demanding strict action against guilty officials and urging the High Court to take urgent notice of the matter, residents alleged that last year 18 properties were identified for demolition but only a few were actually razed. All such exercises were nothing but eyewash and the MCD officials were themselves responsible for all illegal constructions happening in the area, they alleged.
