7,000 kg of firecrackers seized

NEW DELHI: Eight persons were arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police on Monday for allegedly preventing a police squad from carrying out its duty while raiding a godown illegally stocking firecrackers at Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi. The police seized 7,000 kg of firecrackers during the operation.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tajender Luthra, the Crime Branch received a tip-off that some people had illegally stocked a large quantity of firecrackers at Laxmi Nagar. A police team mounted a raid.

But about 100 people gathered outside the godown shouting slogans against the police. With the help of the local police, the Crime Branch sleuths brought the situation under control. In all eight people were arrested for preventing the police from carrying out their duty. The police said the quantity of firecrackers seized from the godown was almost 11 times more than the prescribed limit.

Boy rescued

NEW DELHI: A five-year-old boy was rescued from the clutches of an alleged "tantrik" and his wife at Jharoda on Monday, after he was abducted from Welcome Colony in North-East Delhi on September 4. Both the accused have been arrested.

According to the police, Sonu, son of Nek Singh, had gone missing from his house on September 4. Mr. Singh told the police that a few months ago, a "tantrik" named Mohammad Rashid Ali and his wife, Kheroon Nisa, had expressed their desire to adopt Sonu as they did not have any issue.

The police mounted a raid and arrested Rashid after which he purportedly confessed to his involvement. At his instance, the police raided a Jharoda house where they found Sonu. Rashid's wife was arrested from there.

Three suicide cases

NEW DELHI: Three persons, including a 17-year-old girl, allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents reported from various parts of the Capital on Monday.

According to the police, Poonam, daughter of Hansraj, a resident of Bhalswa and a student of Class VIII in a government school in Jahangirpuri, was found hanging from the ceiling in her house at Samaipur Badli in North-West Delhi on Monday morning by her parents. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

In another incident at Samaipur Badli, a young man, Satya Prakash, was found dead in the house of his maternal uncle on Monday. The incident came to light around 8 a.m. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

At Delhi Cantonment in South-West Delhi, 22-year-old Manoj, a resident of Jharera in Delhi Cantonment, allegedly hanged himself to death on Monday afternoon. The incident came to light around 3 p.m.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Manoj was suffering from mental illness for the past few years.

Drug peddlers nabbed

NEW DELHI: Two alleged drug peddlers were arrested by the Narcotics Branch of the Delhi police at Rohini here on Monday. The police claim to have recovered 1 kg of heroin from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that some drug traffickers would come near a bus shelter at Rohini Sector IV to deliver a heroin consignment, the police laid a trap and arrested two persons.

During interrogation, they identified themselves as Zeeshan Raza Khan, who was holding the bag containing heroin, and his accomplice, Mohammad Ahmed.
