VISAKHAPATNAM: The United Port and Dock Workers' Union, affiliated to the CITU, will participate in the September 29 general strike opposing the United Progressive Alliance Government's vigorous pursuit of the policies of the previous National Democratic Alliance regime, thereby giving a go-by to its promise of safeguarding the public sector and protecting the democratic rights of workers all over the country. Union secretary V.S. Padmanabha Raju accused the UPA Government of allowing private and foreign investments in the key sectors of ports, Telecom, Defence, insurance, airports and coal and said that it would affect the economy and jeopardise national security.
Investment fears
He feared that inviting foreign investment for capacity increase and modernisation of ports would lead to multinational corporations gaining control over them. Attempts to privatise the Pension Fund and to implement Contributory Pension Scheme were also pointers to its anti-employee attitude, Mr. Raju said, reiterating his call for support to the general strike.
