Citizens' panels to be reactivated

Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM: Citizens' committees will be reactivated soon in view of their importance in maintaining communal harmony and peace in the city, Inspector-General of Police (Northern Range) Doraiswamy Naik has said.

Speaking at an informal meeting with presspersons here on Monday, he said a rifle-training programme is being organised for civilians.

He said all police officials and constables in the range have been asked to take people into confidence. People should have faith in the police.

Commending Superintendent of Police Hemant Nimbalkar for ensuring peace and communal harmony during Ganesha festivities this year, particularly for the manner in which the procession concluded in a peaceful manner, he said he has directed the Superintendents of Police in Haveri and Gadag districts to deal firmly with people behind matka gambling.

Mr. Nimbalkar spoke about the measures being taken to curb goonda activities in the city. Already, three persons have been booked under the Goonda Act and detained in different jails, he said. A few more are on the list and will be arrested under the Act soon, he added.
