`Art critics should develop a positive and healthy approach'

Noted art reviewer S.N. Chandrashekar inaugurates orientation camp on classical dance

FOR THE SAKE OF ART: V. N Subba Rao, chairman, Media Academy (third from left) and S.N. Chandrashekar inaugurating the camp in Shimoga on Tuesday.

SHIMOGA: Noted art critic S.N. Chandrasekhar said here on Tuesday that critics should develop a healthy and positive approach instead of being critical just for the sake of it, as it would not only ensure encouragement of artists, but also bring credibility to newspapers and magazines that publish their art reviews.

Inaugurating a two-day orientation camp on classical dance (Shastriya Nritya-Rasa Grahana Shibir), jointly organised by the Karnataka State Music and Dance Academy, the Karnataka State Media Academy, and "Navika," a local daily, he said it is important for critics to be careful while reviewing dance performances because this art form involves myriad expressions. "A casual approach will not do justice," he said.

Mr. Chandrasekhar said that dance is not just the movement of a body, but also a combined expression of music and literature.

Hence, it is necessary for critics to be well acquainted with the nuances of all forms of arts, music and literature, he said. It is also the responsibility of critics to help sustain the interest of the audience in the dance form.Stating that dance, drama and music has failed to attract constructive reviews, he said it is due to the dearth of well-qualified art critics.

Role of the media

He urged the participants of the orientation camp to take advantage of the interactive sessions with art critics and update themselves with knowledge and expertise in the art of reviewing.

Chairman of the Karnataka State Media Academy V.N. Subba Rao said that electronic media is not encouraging art. Emphasising the role of print media in encouraging art, he said that his academy had joined hands with other organizations to see that these art forms do not suffer due to lack of encouragement.

Chairman of Shivamukha Music Academy M. Bharadwaj, who was the chief guest, stressed the need for healthy criticism of art performances, as it goes a long way in promoting fine arts.

Noted art critics and performing artistes are participating in the camp as the resource persons.
