Rs 5,000 for injured lawyers

Traffic restrictions, alleged misbehaviour infuriated the advocates

ALLAHABAD: Uttar Pradesh Bar Council today announced an aid of Rs 5,000 each to the advocates who were injured in a clash with the police. This was informed by former Council vice president Amrendra Nath Singh here.

Over 12 advocates were injured in the clash that lasted about four hours in front of Allahabad High Court yesterday. They were later admitted to various hospitals. About 12 cops were also wounded in the incident.

Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court A.N. Ray, Justices B.S. Chauhan, A.K. Yog and Amitabh Lala, and Additional Advocate General Adish Agrawal visited the hospitals last night and enquired about their health.

Traffic restrictions during the visit of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav yesterday afternoon and alleged misbehaviour with a senior lawyer infuriated the advocates, who indulged in arson and violence. They set afire over six vehicles. Meanwhile, the lawyers decided to go on an indefinite strike from today, besides holding a general house meeting in front of the High Court. Several political parties including Congress and BJP and lawyers' bodies condemned the police lathicharge. -- UNI
