Laudable move

The ban on cell phone and imposition of a dress code in Anna University is immensely laudable. But the anger of students is also understandable because they alone are not responsible for adopting Western culture and values.

The media and parents are equally to blame. The whole system must be reformed.

Nothing can be achieved by coercion, much less with the youngsters. Technology cannot be banished just because of some stray incidents somewhere.

As school students, we were told by the authorities not to wear wristwatches, and the reason was the same — to prevent students from getting distracted.

There can be no second opinion that cell phones should be switched off in classrooms as in official meetings, movie halls and places of worship. But it is ridiculous to ban them from the campus altogether.

I am surprised at the hue and cry over the dress code. Universities are temples of learning, not platforms for showcasing new fashion trends.

Srikanth Paladugu,
Pune
