General strike by unions tomorrow

Special Correspondent

Bus, train services likely to be hit

Air, bus and train traffic will be severely affected Port operations and postal, bank and insurance services will also be hit Strike is against the anti-workers policies of the Central and the State Governments.

CHENNAI: The general strike, called by central trade union organisations on September 29, to demand curbing of foreign direct investment in the public sector and lifting of the freeze on recruitment, is likely to be total in the State with a majority of unions deciding to participate in it.

Air, bus and train traffic will be severely affected on that day. While workers belonging to airport authority union and road transport corporation employees unions have announced their participation in the strike, rail movement may be disrupted due to rail rako stir in 300 centres in the State planned by agricultural workers. Port operations and postal, bank and insurance services will also be hit as employees' unions of the respective services had announced their decision to participate in the one-day strike.

Though it will not be a bandh as traders are not participating in the strike, they may close their shops in some areas, as one of the major demands is to drop foreign direct investment in retail sector. Traders who feared that FDI in retail trade might adversely affect them would automatically down their shutters in support of the strike, said the State vice president of the CITU, A.K. Padmanabhan.
