Five in joint lead

TUTICORIN: Five players, S. Venkatasundaram, M. Vinothkumar (both from Chennai), S. Nitin (Salem), Lalith Babu (AP) and T.R. Shanmuganathan (Madurai) were leading with 4 points each at the end of the fourth round in the 18th SPIC Trophy Fide-rated chess tournament conducted by SPIC Sports Council here on Tuesday.

The results: Ram S. Krishnan (3) lost to S. Venkatsundaram (4); T.R. Shanmuganathan (4) bt C. Praveen Kumar (3); P. Phoobalan (3.5) drew with K. Gopalakrishnan (3.5); M. Vinoth Kumar (4) bt Naveen Hegde (3); M.K. Ralaguraja (3) lost to M.R. Lalith Babu (4); S. Ganesh Babu (3) lost to S. Nitin (4); P. Maheshwaran (2.5) lost to M. Dusthageer Ibrahim (3.5); B. Adhiban (3) drew with N. Lokesh (3); K.E.R. Ranjitha (3) drew with M. Paramasviam (3); K. Priyadharshan (3.5) bt Ashok Kumar Ramadoss (2.5).

VVV regains title

V.V. Vanniaperumal (VVV) College, Virudhunagar regained the Rajamannar Memorial Trophy after a lapse of five years defeating Sri Meenakshi Government College for women, Madurai 3-2 via tie-breaker in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University women's hockey tournament at Madurai on Tuesday.

At the regulation time, the teams were locked goalless.

In the tie-breaker, Karpagalakshmi, Gangadevi and Srimathi scored for VVV. Raja Roshini and Sakunthala scored for Sri Meenakshi College.

Tuticorin begins well

Tuticorin humbled host Madurai by 43 runs in the inaugural match of the MDCA Trophy inter-district under-13 cricket tournament at Madurai on Tuesday. C. Ramachandran, Mayor, Madurai Corporation, inaugurated the tournament.

The scores: Tuticorin 112 for five in 30 overs (Prem Prabhakar 55 not out) bt Madurai 69 in 22 overs (Prem Prabhakar three for 10).

Sivagangai 91 for nine in 30 overs lost to Kanyakumari 92 for four in 25 overs.

No problems for RVS

RVS Engg. (Dindigul) easily beat Sudharsan Engg. (Pudukottai) 51-24 in the Anna University Zone IX inter-collegiate basketball tournament at the Sethu Institute of Technology courts, Kariapatti, near Madurai on Tuesday.

The results: RVS 51 (D. Prince Wilson 22) bt Sudharsan 24 (Sivasankaran 17).

Thiagarajar CE (Madurai) 33 (Sivakumar 14) bt Alagappa Chettiar CE (Karaikudi) 11.
