LDF wins two-thirds majority in corporation

Front wins 37 of the 52 Kollam city wards


KOLLAM: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has been voted to power with a clear majority in the Kollam Corporation and the Paravur and Punalur municipalities in Kollam district. The LDF, which ruled the previous corporation with the support of two independent councillors, now has a two-thirds majority.

When the results were announced on Tuesday, the LDF won 37 of the 52 corporation wards. In a straight fight in the cantonment ward, incumbent Mayor Sabida Beegum of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) won with the highest majority of 1,669 votes.

Several UDF stalwarts were defeated in the corporation elections. They include the Congress leaders Karumalil Sukumaran, A.K. Hafeez, Joseph Kuruvila and H. Abdul Rehman, and Indian Union Muslim League district president A. Yunus Kunju. The prominent LDF leaders who lost are the Centre of India Trade Unions leader E. Shahnavas Khan from Thamarakulam and the RSP leader M.S. Babu from Asramam North.

The LDF scored a two-thirds majority in the Punalur and Paravur municipalities too. The front won in 26 wards and the UDF in six in Punalur. In Paravur, the LDF won in 19, the UDF in nine and the BJP in one.
