CHENNAI: Planting of saplings near the Mylapore temple tank, a photo exhibition on the many facets of tourist attractions in south India, and a heritage walk marked "World Tourism Day" celebrations here on Tuesday.

Right from the morning, the Indiatourism staff gave a warm, traditional welcome to passengers arriving by both international flights and domestic services at Anna International Terminal and Kamaraj Domestic Terminal. They offered sweets and welcome mementoes.

The scene then shifted to the Mylapore temple tank where the saplings were planted by city school students and staff of Indiatourism to give a push to the beautification programme undertaken by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department and an NGO, "Namma Mylapore."

For a visual treat, a photo exhibition — featuring 76 photographs covering all facets of tourism industry and attractions, including monuments, was inaugurated. The exhibition will be on till October 1 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. There is no entry fee. M.A. Siddique, Director of Government Museum, inaugurated it.

Subhash Dama, Regional Director, South, Indiatourism, said the main theme of this year's World Tourism Day was "Travel and Transport from the imaginary of Jules Verne to the reality of the 21st century."

In the evening, the heritage walk covering the Mylapore area by the students and travel trade was organised along the streets of Thiruvalluvar Temple, Jain Temple and the narrow streets where old traditional heritage houses and shops are located. The tour covered the Mylapore church also.

Ironically, The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) did not organise any function in the city or at the Tourism Complex. But, it organised a function at a school in Tiruvallur district.
