NABARD assistance for road works

CHENNAI: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned an assistance of Rs.104.27 crores to the Tamil Nadu Government for improving 395 roads in 29 districts and 2 bridges in Villupuram and Kanyakumari. These projects will cover a length of 1,357 km of roads.

According to a NABARD release, the bank has sanctioned Rs.195.54 crores during 2005-06 for Tamil Nadu covering medium and minor irrigation of Rs.50.35 crores. Rainwater harvesting structures for Rs.40.92 crores and improvement to rural roads for Rs.104.27 crores.

BSNL staff to join nationwide strike

CHENNAI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Chennai Telephones and Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle, and members of the National Federation of Telecom Employees and the BSNL Employees Union (BSNLEU) will join the nationwide strike on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the NFTE Circle Secretary, C.K. Mathivanan, and R. Gunasekaran, Circle Secretary of BSNLEU, said they are joining the agitation protesting against the hike of 74 per cent of Foreign Direct Investment in the telecom sector. — Special Correspondent

8 killed, 30 injured in road accident

ERODE: Eight persons died and 30 were injured in a road accident this morning near Vujayamangalam. According to police, an STC bus and a brick-laden lorry coming from Uthukuli to Vijayamanmgalam collided head on near Vijayamangalam around 8 a.m., on Tuesday. The lorry driver, Murugesan, and another woman travelling in the bus died on the spot. Thirtyfive others sustained serious injuries. They were taken to a private hospital in Perundurai where Vignesh (12), Raju (30), the lorry cleaner and Ganesan (31) of Ammapet and Bhavani travelling in the bus died. At the Erode Government Headquarters Hospital, Fula (13) of Gani Rowthar Tank area, died. — Staff Reporter

Lawyer murder case: 2 surrender in court

Tuticorin: Two persons — Umashankar (31) and Sai Prasad (27) — had surrendered before a judicial magistrate court at Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a lawyer at Usilampatti on September 24.

Sources said the lawyer was murdered by an unidentified gang, while he was travelling in his motorbike. The duo, who had surrendered, were later sent to Central Prisons in Palayamkottai. — Staff Reporter

Tushaar Mehta dead

CHENNAI: The Honorary Consul for the Czech Republic and president of Gold Club of Chennai, Tushaar Mehta, passed away following cardiac arrest on September 27. He was 58 and is survived by his wife and two sons. A postgraduate in metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, Mehta had done his graduation in gemmology in the United States. He was a Rotarian and the past president of the Indian Jaycees. He was also a cricket commentator on All India Radio. — Special Correspondent

Exam timetable for correspondence course

CHENNAI: The Madras University has released the timetable for the undergraduate, postgraduate, certificate and diploma course examinations in the distance education stream scheduled to be held in October 2005.

Seminar on digital image processing

Thanjavur: The Department of ECE, P.R. Engineering College at Vallam near here will organise a one-day national seminar on `Digital Image processing on satellite images' in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Regional Remote Sensing Service Centre (PRSSC), Department of Space, Government of India, on September 30, according to a release issued here by the college. P. Manavalan, Senior Scientist, PRSSC, will inaugurate the seminar. Scientists C.J. Jagadeesha, S. Elango, and Dr. P.G. Diwakar, Head, PRSSC participate in the seminar. Demo against attack on pressman

TIRUCHI : Condemning the alleged assault on and "illegal detention" of a press reporter at Tirupur in Coimbatore district, members of the Tiruchi Press Club staged a demonstration near the Collectorate here on Monday to protest the incident. — Staff Reporter

TASMAC shop looted

Unidentified persons entered a Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation shop on Salai road here late on Sunday night and allegedly stole cash kept inside. The police said the accused gained entry after breaking open the backdoor and window and allegedly stole Rs.78,752 in cash inside. — Staff Reporter

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 115.17 feet today. The inflow was 10,122 cusecs and the discharge, 23,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.

Crushed to death

ERODE: A mother and her two sons were crushed to death on Tuesday in an accident. According to the police, Pappathy (30), wife of Raju, a Narikuravar, was sleeping under a tree in Lakshminagar area near Chitode, with her sons Vijay (3) and Jai (18 months) in the afternoon.

A van crossing the area lost control and ran over the three and dashed against the tree.

They died on the spot. On information, the Chitode police rushed to the spot and registered a case against the van driver. - Staff Reporter

Mass contact day

ERODE: The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said that a mass contact programme would be conducted at Mudalipalayam in Uthiyur area, Kangeyam taluk, on September 29 at 11 a.m.

He wanted the public to represent their grievances.

Demonstration

ERODE: More than 300 men and women of Jayaramapuram near Arachalure staged a demonstration before the Arachalure Police Station on Tuesday and demanded that the police trace a labourer of their area, who was missing for the last few days. According to the police, a few days back some persons allegedly beat Rajan following which he was missing.

The villagers urged the police to trace him and take action against those who beat him. After an assurance from the police that they would do the needful in this regard, the villagers dispersed. - Staff Reporter

Body of baby found

Nagercoil: The police recovered the body of a three-day old baby from a bush at Athikadai channel near here on Tuesday. Alerted by the public, the police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. — Staff Reporter

Woman commits suicide

Nagercoil: A woman committed suicide by setting herself on fire on Tuesday morning. Mururugan of Anjugramam married Chithirai Selvi of Sathankulam a few years back. He used to quarrel with her in an inebriated state often. — Staff Reporter

Man held for assault

Tuticorin: A man was arrested on Tuesday for assaulting Mayilsamy (32) at Maniyachi near here on Monday. Vellaichamy (38) attacked the complainant after their spouses had a fight over a trivial issue and a case was registered at Maniyachi police station on September 16. The accused considered it an insult and assaulted Mayilsamy. — Staff Reporter
