Tardy progress in counting, transfer of results

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Announcement of election had never been as sluggish in Kannur as on Monday when all the communication system established for the quick transfer or results to the district headquarters and to the State Election Commission (SEC) broke down following the State-wide failure of efforts to upload the results to the website.

According to officials here, the results of all the 81 grama panchayats, nine block panchayats and the district panchayat can be announced only early on Wednesday. It was 5 p.m. when all the results of the five municipalities in the district were officially declared. It was announced earlier that all arrangements had been made to announce the results as quickly as possible. As per the plan, the results will be posted on the SEC's website as and when they were sent from the counting centres. Although the website did not work, there was no alternative arrangement for the dissemination of results by Returning Officers in 14 counting centres, including five in the municipalities. The media centre at the Collectorate was of no use as no results reached there. Each counting centre was equipped with a computer manned by three IT @ School teachers as well as a fax machine.
