Joint ventures with Australian firms sought

Bangalore: Finance and Industries Minister P.G.R. Sindhia has urged a visiting South Australian trade delegation to forge joint ventures with the State in the food processing, education, information technology, biotechnology, automobile and healthcare sectors.

Karnataka is industrially a fast-growing State with advantages in several fields, he told a high-level South Australian trade delegation led by Industry and Trade Minister Paul Holloway during an interactive session here.

Mr. Holloway said his province is keen on forging relations with India, particularly Karnataka, in trade and commerce.

Time not ripe for polls, says Dharam Singh

Bangalore: Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh is of the view that the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders H.D. Deve Gowda and his son, H.D. Kumaraswamy, are frequently speaking of snap elections in the State depending on the prevailing situation and developments. Mr. Dharam Singh said such warnings need not be taken seriously, while speaking to a television channel. "The time is not ripe for elections," he asserted.

Government suspends official

Bangalore: The Government has placed under suspension the Backward Classes and Minorities Officer for Kolar district, N.S. Ramanjaneyalu, on the charge of misappropriation. The suspension order is based on the report of the Commissioner for Backward Classes, according to an official press release. During 2004-05, the official bought furniture and other items for hostels costing Rs. 17.88 lakhs, without the permission of the zilla panchayat. He also spent huge amounts without the approval of the zilla panchayat, the press release said. — Special Correspondent

Warning against joining strike

Bangalore: The State Government has warned its employees of serious consequences if they participate in the strike called by the Akhila Karnataka State Government Employees' Federation on Thursday. A press release issued by P.K. Baburao, Under-Secretary to Government, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, said employees participating in the strike will be liable for action. Mr. Baburao also said that the federation has not been recognised by the Government.

However, federation president U.D. Narasimhaiah in a letter stated that all State Government employees will abstain from work on September 29. — Staff Reporter

Explanation sought from Council Secretary

Bangalore: Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan has sought an explanation from the in-charge Secretary to the Council, Jayashankara Murthy, taking cognisance of a complaint by two senior officials of the Council Secretariat. The two have complained to Mr. Sudarshan that Mr. Murthy is guilty of serious administrative lapses and urged the Chairman to initiate action against him.

Mr. Sudarshan told presspersons here that he had asked Mr. Murthy to go on six days' leave and not to use the official car during that period. — Staff Reporter

Kannada meet in Pondicherry

Bangalore: The 9th All-India Kannada Literary and Cultural Conference will be held at Pondicherry on October 15 and 16. The conference has been organised by Dehali Kannadiga, a Kannada monthly published from Delhi. The conference will be inaugurated by Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy with S. Rame Gowda, former Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka University, presiding. It will deal with topics such as Kannada language and literature and an exhibition of Kannada books. — Special Correspondent

Man washed away in Bhima

BIJAPUR: Syedsab Husseinsab Syed, 40, of hubli, was washed away in the Bhima following a landslide near Balaganur in Sindagi taluk on Monday.

Syed, who was an employee with Hubli-based contractor working on an irrigation project, had gone to the riverbank along with two of his friends to see the flood. However, he slipped into river as the portion of riverbank on which he was standing collapsed. After several hours, his body was fished out and sent to Hubli, police said. — Staff Correspondent

Condoled

GULBARGA: Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University V.B. Coutinho on Tuesday condoled the death of D.M. Nanjundappa and said that the country has lost a great academician.

Prof. Coutinho expressed his deep grief and sorrow at Nanjundappa's demise and said he (Nanjundappa) was a great economist and excellent administrator. — Special Correspondent

Power shutdown

BELLARY: In view of the replacement of 11 kV line, there will be no power supply on Wednesday and Thursday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. in and around Cowl Bazar, Radio Park, Ganesh Temple Street, Gadang Street, Kanaka Street, Tailor Street, Bhaskar Naidu Street, Jagannath Temple Street, Swatantra Nagar, Dhobi Street, Tinker Street, St. Joseph School Road, Adarsh Nagar, KHB Colony, and Small Market. GESCOM officials have requested the public to extend their cooperation.

Belgaum: The district Philatelic Bureau will hold a philatelic and numismatics exhibition at the conference hall of Belgaum Head Post Office on Railway Station Road for three days from

Tuesday. The event is being organised in cooperation with Belgaum Stamps and Coins Club, which is observing its silver jubilee this year. Entry to the exhibition is free.

Four held

KARWAR: Haliyal police arrested Mahantesh Ningappa Bobate (25) of Tatvanagi village in Haliyal taluk, Rajendra alias Dattatraya Kulkarni (27) of Hukkeri taluk, Sachin alias Ramachandra Gayakwad (18) and Shivraj alias Shivu Rame Gowda on Monday on the charge of dacoity. They have been remanded in judicial custody till October 10. Police are on the look out for three others. It is said that the accused stole cash and gold ornaments from a merchant at Haliyal on August 31 last year. — Correspondent
