BELLARY: The State Government, after completing the process of delimitation of the wards in Bellary City Corporation areas, has finalised the reservation of the wards to various categories. Of the total 51 wards, seven have been reserved for the Scheduled Castes, of which two wards have been earmarked for women; five wards for the Scheduled Tribes, two for women; 14 for Other Backward Castes (A), of which five are for women; three for OBC (B), of which one is for women; and 22 for General category, of which seven are earmarked for women. The delimitation of the wards was taken up following the Government upgrading the Bellary Municipal Council to that of the Corporation. As a result, the number of wards was increased by 26, taking the total to 51. With the delimitation process complete, the announcement of dates for holding elections to the Corporation is awaited. The State Government, after upgrading the council to a corporation, had continued the sitting elected body for a period of six months, as a stop-gap arrangement within which time, elections had to be held. Owing to the delay in completion of the delimitation of the wards and the process of reservation, elections could not be held on time. However, the Government issued an order superseding the Corporation and appointed the Deputy Commissioner as the administrator. As against this order, the first Mayor Somashekar Reddy obtained the stay from the High Court on the ground that he, as Mayor, was yet to complete the one year term in office.
