Water level in the Bhima is increasing, flood alert sounded

BIJAPUR: There was some let up in the flood situation along the Malaprabha, Ghataprabha and Krishna, though they continue to flow at the danger level.

Twenty villages have been affected following the spate in these rivers and the district administration has so far shifted 5,000 people to safe places. According to S.G. Patil, Assistant Commissioner of Bagalkot, around 2,000 cattle have also been shifted. As a temporary measure, the administration plans to distribute Rs. 1,000 each to affected families from Tuesday. Besides opening two gruel centre, foodgrains and essential materials have been distributed, he added.

On Monday, there was a two-ft drop in the level of the Malaprabha, but houses in Haganur, Alur SK, and several villages in Badami taluk are still waterlogged.

Large tracts of agricultural land in Biranur, Talakwad, Govinakoppa, Chiralakoppa, Mumaraddikoppa, Budhihal, Kitthali, Sulla, Hebballi, Ingalagundi and Kalasa are submerged.

The Ghataprabha is receding but Yadwad Bridge near Mudhol continues to be overflowed. Villages on the banks of the river such as Malali, Ontagodi, Mirji, Nandagaum, Chanal and Davaleshwar have been waterlogged.

Inflow at the Alamatti Dam dropped to 1.9 lakh cusecs from yesterday's rate of 1.96 lakh cusecs.

After the Maharashtra Government started decreasing the discharge from its dams, authorities at the Alamatti Dam also decreased the discharge from the reservoir to 1.72 lakh cusecs, giving some respite downstream, especially on the contour of the Narayanapur reservoir. Yesterday, the discharge from the dam was 2 lakh cusecs.

Water level in the dam rose to 518.87 m as against the full level of 519.6 m. In the downstream Narayanpur reservoir, there was slight rise in the water level (491.87 m).

Meanwhile, the level in the Bhima is steadily increasing, as the Maharashtra Government is releasing water from Ujani Dam at the rate of 1.5 lakh cusecs. The river is brimming and at least two villages are facing flood threat. People living in low-lying villages have been asked to move to safe places, sources in the Revenue Department said.
