CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday told the Assembly that elections to cooperative societies would be conducted only after knowing the direction of the larger Bench of the High Court on the issue. She said the term of office of the administrative committees of primary, central and apex cooperatives came to a close in May, 2001 and special officers were appointed to the cooperative bodies. The Government issued an Ordinance on June 12, 2001 to give powers to the administrators appointed under Section 33 (12) of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Societies Act and the special officers nominated under Sections 88 and 89 of the Act, to enrol new members. Writ Petitions were filed in the High Court challenging the new Section, 89-A. The court, in its interim order on April 9, 2002, said pending the final verdict on the petitions, the new members thus enrolled could not contest or vote. Referring to the relief package announced to the farmers, she said the Centre with its vast resources should take steps to waive the cooperative loans of the farmers.
