MARK OF RESPECT: Tibetans holding a candle light vigil in Mysore on Tuesday.
MYSORE: The Tibetan community in Bylakuppe staged a candle light vigil in the city on Tuesday to commemorate the crackdown on Lhasa, to mourn the tsunami victims and pray for world peace. More than 300 Tibetans from Bylakuppe, Mysore and Hunsur assembled at the Town Hall and held a prayer meeting before staging the candle light vigil as a mark of respect to the thousands of Tibetans who were "victims of the Chinese atrocities." They also took out a procession through the main thoroughfares of the city. The members of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress and the Regional Tibetan Women's Association said that the Chinese have failed to crush the will and spirit of the Tibetan community. They said that the Chinese had decided to build a railway line into Tibet to completely wipe out Tibetan culture, religion and nationality. When completed, it will enable China to exploit Tibet's natural resources and help resettle more than 25 million Chinese in Tibet, members of the Tibetan Youth Congress said. The 2600-km long rail track from Gormut to Lhasa will not only destroy the fragile Himalayan environment but also pose a threat to Indian security and have serious economic consequences for the Indian industry and market, the Tibetan Congress activists said. A memorandum was faxed to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan urging the United Nations to resolve the issue of Tibet soon.
