``The Supreme Court was clear in its order on how admission to vacant seats should be conducted"
CHENNAI: The State Government will implement the Supreme Court's latest order on admissions to engineering courses to unfilled seats in self-financing colleges, the Education Minister, C.Ve. Shanmugam, told the Assembly. Responding to an observation made by the Bharatiya Janata Party deputy leader H.Raja on the confusion over admission to engineering colleges, Mr Shanmugam said the Supreme Court was clear in its order on how admission to vacant seats should be conducted. First, the candidates who appeared for the entrance examinations conducted either by the State or a consortium of colleges should be considered. After this, admission should be made on the basis of marks scored by candidates in higher secondary examinations, subject to the minimum eligibility marks fixed by the States. (The court in its order last week said this arrangement was only for the current academic year.) The Minister said that an association of colleges misinterpreted the order to mean that mere qualifying marks in the higher secondary examination would ensure admission to colleges. Referring to a large number of seats remaining vacant in the colleges, Mr Raja said a lasting solution should be found to end the uncertainty.
