BANGALORE: They call it "Namma Bengaluru, Namma Hemme." This major merchandising exercise, also called "Bangalore Shopping Festival 2005," runs through the entire festival season with merchant establishments across the city participating. Shoppers can win prizes and freebies at shops and shopping complexes on Mahatma Gandhi Road, Brigade Road and Commercial Street, and at Basvanagudi, Gandhi Bazar, Indiranagar, Koramangala and other business areas. Apart from the local festive buyers, the participating shops are also looking at tourists who are expected to pass through the city during Dasara and other events to come. Shoppers get a chance to win prizes, which include silver articles, air tickets, gift vouchers, and gold. To make the shopping more lively, businesses have also planned add-ons, such as celebrity visits to select shops, games, on-the-spot gifts, food stalls, fireworks, folk music and dance performances. A concurrent event will be "A Taste of Bangalore Food," with leading restaurant chains offering what they call a multi-cuisine affair with the palate. The main attractions will be specialities from the many regions of Karnataka. Festival shopping used to be a subdued, family outing kind of affair till about a decade ago when business associations began to pool resources to turn it into a shopping festival.
