CHENNAI:
The Pattali Maanavar Sangam, student wing of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, on Tuesday staged a demonstration demanding that the State legislature pass a Bill scrapping the entrance examination for professional education courses.
Rural students
Raising slogans and carrying placards, the protesters said the entrance examination affected the chances of rural students hailing from the weaker sections of society.
The PMK had for long demanded the scrapping of the tough entrance test.
When the State Government sought to implement the demand this year, the judiciary intervened and the decision was put off to the next academic year.
The Supreme Court had in its order said the States were competent to enact legislation scrapping the entrance tests.
"Why does not the Government bring in the Bill immediately," said Sangam president K. Pari Mohan. He sought the immediate tabling of a Bill in the Assembly.
