VISAKHAPATNAM: The torrential rain that lashed the city has succeeded in quenching its thirst. But the downpour also left several problems in its wake. The condition of roads which was already bad has become worse. Even in the heart of the city, at the RTC Complex, huge craters have developed. Driving obviously becomes risky.

At many places, potholes appeared because of the downpour. In the One Town area, the ongoing underground drainage works hamper restoration. Only after the drainage works are completed, permanent restoration can be taken up. Until then, may be authorities want the citizens to drive cautiously!

In the other parts of the city like MVP Colony, China Waltair, Seethammadhara and IV Town Police Station area also, roads developed potholes and craters.

The risk becomes more intense with gaping holes in the middle of an otherwise smooth road. The accompanying picture shows one side of the road eroded by a stream near the IV Town Police Station. Priority should be given to repairing such places.

Time to repair

According to sources, it takes a fortnight for roads to be repaired in Wards 21 to 30. At present the repair works are going on in MVP Colony. It is learnt that it would take at least 15 days for the repair works to be completed. The loss in the 10 wards alone is estimated to run into crores of rupees. One would expect that after taking stock of the situation repairs would be prioritised depending upon the risk they pose.
