COIMBATORE: A minimally invasive surgery was performed on a six-month-old girl child at the Lotus Hospital here to remove cataract from both eyes. Swetha had cataract at birth, a press release from the hospital has said. The Chairman and Medical Director of the hospital, Selva K. Sundaramurthy, and ophthalmologist Jacob Mathew diagnosed the case as congenital cataract and took it up for keyhole surgery. The cataract was removed from both the eyes and intra-ocular lens were implanted. Related surgical procedures were also performed to prevent vision impairment in future. The child gained good vision, the release said. A day after the surgery she was able to follow the path of light and respond to the presence of various objects. She was discharged two days after the surgery and went home without any bandage on the eyes, as recovery after this procedure was fast, the release said. The hospital has cautioned against congenital cataract and stressed early detection and cure. It said full vision development took place from birth till two years of age. This was the most crucial period for vision development in a child. Hence detection of congenital cataract in the six month had to be considered as late stage. A three-month-old baby with a similar problem was operated upon successfully last year.
