BANGALORE: The city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday alleged that the nexus between councillors, officials in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and contractors is responsible for large-scale corruption in various projects being implemented in the city. It demanded a probe by the Corps of Detectives into the misuse of public money. The party organised a protest at the Yeshwantpur Circle on Tuesday against corruption in the civic body and especially the works undertaken in the Malleswaram Assembly constituency. In a statement to the press, the city BJP President Ashwathnarayan and others cited the case of the "so-called" development works at J.P. Park in Muthyallamma Nagar in the Jalahalli ward that are under implementation for a record 21 years. So far Rs. 5 crores have gone down the drain and no progress is visible. The officials and contractors have misused funds in the execution of several projects, including the Sankey Tank where a well laid out park was destroyed and enormous public funds are being wasted to lay a new park in the name of Sankey Tank II stage development project, they alleged. The other similar case is with regard to the Malleswaram Pavilion ground, which is being misused by the BMP officials, who are letting it out to dealers in second hand cars every Saturday and Sunday. Children and youth are being denied the use of the ground which was once the hub of sporting activities. About asphalting of roads, they said that in the Malleswaram Assembly constituency as against the stipulation of 70 mm thickness for the black top, only 10 mm thickness is found.
