THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The thumping victory of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the elections to the Corporation Council was marked by jubilation all over the city. LDF workers took to the streets, beating drums, flying flags and dancing in wild abandon. Victory marches and vehicle rallies were organised at several places. The changing equations in Kerala politics were in evidence when the first candidate to be declared elected - DIC(K) candidate from Poojappura K. Maheswaran Nair - emerged from the SMV High School, where the counting of votes took place on Tuesday. He was swamped by a huge crowd of cheering LDF workers with red flags in their hands. Mr. Maheswaran Nair was swept away by the crowd, which chanted slogans in support of the LDF. It was only a good 30 minutes later that DIC(K) activists joined the fray with their flags. As the crowd in front of the school swelled, traffic slowed down to a trickle and police started diverting vehicles. A `chenda' troupe, which came on the scene, soon had the crowd clapping and stepping in tune. As the loudspeakers announced each victory, the shouts grew louder and the flags flew higher. The victors were cheered and the losers booed. Groups of LDF workers arrived in decorated vehicles carrying cut outs and huge pictures of the candidates, bringing traffic to a halt. One group had a bare-bodied LDF activist painted all over in red. Vehicles flying the DIC(K) and red flags criss-crossed the road in front of the venue.
