Tirupur: The excitement on the court was spoiled by off-court drama on the opening day of the South Zone inter-State badminton championships at the Tirupur City Club courts here on Wednesday. With Kerala landing with two teams, the start was delayed for more than two-and-half hours. The unaffiliated team, in a desperate bid to gain entry, moved the munsiff court in Tirupur for a temporary injunction. Despite all the confusion, the organisers managed the show. The Karnataka women started their campaign well, scoring a 2-0 win over Pondicherry. Karnataka State champion Aswini Ponappa made mincemeat of S. Kavita 11-0, 11-0. The scratch combination of Ruth Misha and Saumya Padhy then drubbed S. Kavita and S. Gayathri 15-4, 15-4 to book their side a semifinal berth. In the men's section, Karnataka led 2-0 over Pondicherry. Favourite Rohan Castelino wasted no time in dispatching Satish Mathew 15-4, 15-1, while Guru Prasath and Vineeth Manuel defeated Sadhique and Habeeb 15-6, 15-2. The results: Women: Karnataka bt Pondicherry 2-0 (Aswini Ponappa bt S. Kavita 11-0, 11-0, Ruth Misha-Saumya Padhy bt S. Kavita-S. Gayathri 15-4, 15-2). Men: Karnataka leads Pondicherry 2-0 (Rohan Castelino bt Sathish Mathew 15-4, 15-1; Guru Prasath-Vineeth Manuel bt Sadhique-Habeeb 15-6, 15-2.
