Sensex crosses 8600 level

PSU stocks hog the limelight

MUMBAI:
The stock market closed above the 8600-mark for the first time on Wednesday. While the BSE Sensex rose by 81 points to close at 8606, the NSE Nifty gained 23 points to close at 2598. Firm global markets and a drop in crude prices lifted market sentiment, according market participants.
Buying in ONGC, BHEL, Reliance, HDFC, Hero Honda and ICICI Bank lifted the Sensex.
Hindustan Lever rose 2.6 per cent to Rs.185.50. Bank stocks gained further on fresh buying. ICICI Bank rose by 1.5 per cent to Rs. 597, HDFC Bank gained 1.5 per cent to Rs 691.
Among the information technology companies, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) gained nearly one per cent to Rs.1,475.
