Letters to the Editor
Suicides by farmers are on the rise. What is worse, as P. Sainath has reported in The Hindu from Maharashtra, even where the farmers have been able to return the loans to the moneylender they have been driven to suicide. This is because of the diabolic game plan adopted by the lenders of not returning land titles mortgaged by the farmers even when the loans have been repaid. It is obvious that the official machinery is hand-in-glove with the moneylenders. The current state of affairs points to the failure of institutional finance agencies to serve the poor farmers.
