NSS unit of Sona College of Technology, Salem, adjudged the best wing

CHENNAI: Youth constitute more than 42 per cent of the country's population and the future of the nation is in their hands, said G. Rajasekaran, Director, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development at the NSS and Tsunami art exhibition awards presentation function at Anna University on Thursday.

"Academic excellence merely fetches a job, but it is social consciousness that completes education. If the students are determined, India will not even have to wait till 2020. By 2010, we will be global leaders in terms of economy and human resources," Mr. Rajasekaran said.

He gave away the awards to students from various colleges, in recognition of their contribution to society.

D. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, praised the students for their efforts. "It is your responsibility to transfer knowledge to the downtrodden. Engineers have the greatest role and responsibility in the development of society," he said.

Recalling his student days as secretary of the NSS wing, he said he had organised 120 camps. "I'm glad to see students cleaning the campus on Saturdays. Some of them read out lessons for visually impaired students."

M. Mohamed Waseem, a student of Sona College of Technology, Salem, was honoured for his paper on `Sago production-pollution and utilisation' and his proposal handed over to government authorities. Mohamed would meet the expert committee early next month. Two NSS volunteers of Sona College got awards and its NSS unit was adjudged the best. R. Veerasekaran, State Liason Officer, Tamil Nadu State NSS cell, offered his felicitations to the students.
