Nationwide strike evokes partial response in Hassan

Nationalised banks across the district remain closed

HASSAN: The call given by the Left parties and the Joint Committee of Trade Unions for the nationwide strike on Thursday opposing the increase in petrol and diesel prices and privatisation policies of the Union and State governments evoked partial response in Hassan. While nationalised banks across the district remained closed, other offices including, the Post Offices, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., and Life Insurance Corporation of India worked with skeletal staff, according to reports reaching here.

Hundreds of activists of Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Students' Federation of India (SFI), workers of anganwadi, Akshara Dasoha and gram panchayats took out a procession and formed a human chain at Narasimharaja Circle. They also staged rasta roko for a while near the Deputy Commissioner's office. The employees of anganwadi, Akshara Dasoha and gram panchayat held demonstration in front of the zilla panchayat office and raised slogans against the "anti people" policies of the Government.

Labourers affiliated to CITU took out a procession from Inspection Bungalow in Sakleshpur and raised slogans against the Union and State governments.

Mixed response

Processions and public speeches by various trade union leaders marked the all-India general strike held here on Thursday.

However, the response was mixed and normal life remained unaffected.

Except for banks and insurance employees being on strike, the movement of vehicular traffic went as usual. A few shops and business establishments remained closed while others continued with normal trade activities.

Police had made elaborate security arrangements.

However, the strike passed off peacefully without any untoward incident. Reports reaching the district headquarters said that the response to the strike was mixed in Hospet and other parts of the district.

Procession

Davangere Staff Correspondent reports:

All nationalised banks, insurance companies, post offices, telephone offices and other offices remained closed here on Thursday as part of the nationwide strike.

Employees of these organisations took out a procession in the city and later assembled at the Davangere City Municipal where the trade union leaders addressed them.

H.K. Ramachandrappa, Lakshminarayan Bhat, Sheik Hussain, Shivappa and Sharadamma were among the trade union leaders who addressed the protestors. People were put to hardship owing to closure of banks. However cooperative banks functioned as usual and Railway staff issued tickets to commuters.
