Air Deccan flight suffers bird hit

Coimbatore: Nearly 60-odd passengers on board the Mumbai-Coimbatore Air Deccan flight had a miraculous escape as the flight suffered a bird hit while landing at the airport here on Thursday morning. According to airport sources, when the flight was descending towards the runway at 9.30 a.m., a peacock hit the wings.

However, the flight crew managed to ensure a smooth landing. Because of the snag developed by the engine due to bird-hit, the flight, scheduled to return to Mumbai, was grounded and all the 90-odd passengers bound for Mumbai were stranded. Their tickets were refunded enabling them to make alternative arrangements, Air Deccan sources said.

`Adulterated fertilizer sold by cooperatives'

CHENNAI: Federation of All Farmers Association, Tamil Nadu, has alleged that adulterated fertilizer is being sold by agricultural cooperative societies in the State. In a memorandum to the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, the association said farmers in Pallipalayam in Namakkal district found that the DAP and urea bags purchased from the local cooperative society contained stones and other chemical materials. If farmers used the stock it would have damaged both the soil and the standing crops. The president of the federation, K.P.Ramalingam, who submitted the memorandum, appealed to the Governor to enquire into the matter and take action. — Special Correspondent

Missing policeman case transferred to CB-CID

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday transferred the investigation of a policeman missing case to the Crime Brach-CID.

The policeman, K. Ramesh, attached to the Armed Reserve Police in Ramanathapuram went missing since May 11, 2004 and his father, P. Karthigaisamy of Tirumangalam, moved a habeas corpus petition before the Bench.

A Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice S.K. Krishnan said the Bench issued notice to the police on March 3 and as many as six status reports were filed by the Ramanathapuram police. "However, the fact remains that no clue or positive information regarding the whereabouts have been stated in the reports." Hence, it directed the Inspector-General of Police, Crime Branch-CID to take up the matter. Later, the case was posted to October 27. — Staff Reporter

History Congress begins today

NAGAPATTINAM: The 12th session of the Tamil Nadu History Congress will be held for three days from September 30 to October 2 at A.V.C. College in Mayiladuturai. `Driver-cum-conductor' posts to be filled

CHENNAI: As vacancies for `driver cum conductor' posts in the Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation have to be filled, candidates who have passed secondary school leaving certificate examination and obtained heavy vehicle driving licence are asked to contact the Employment Exchange (Technical) in Chennai before October 5.

The candidates should have registered with both technical and general Employment Exchanges in Chennai for post of `driver cum conductor,' Collector S. Chandramohan said in a release here. — Special Correspondent,

Meeting

TIRUCHI: District-level meetings of Tamil Nadu Disabled Coordination Council would be held once in every three months to review implementation of rehabilitation measures for the welfare of the handicapped. A decision to this effect was taken at its meeting held here on Wednesday. The Special Commissioner for Rehabilitation of Disabled, Mohan Varghese Chunkath, chaired the meeting.

The Collector, K.Nanda Kishore, and the DRDA Project Officer, M.Manohara Singh, participated in the meeting.

Helpline

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation has urged the State Government to constitute a Helpline Committee in the Registration Department.

A resolution adopted at its executive committee meeting held here recently urged the Chief Minister to check irregularities in the functioning of the department. Despite computerisation of the department, lack of transparency posed hardships to the public.

Adequate stock in all fair price shops

TIRUCHI: Adequate stocks of essential commodities have been moved to all fair price shops in the district to ensure 100 per cent distribution to cardholders, the Collector, K.Nanda Kishore, has said.

Selection trials

TIRUCHI: The district-level selection trials for rural sportspersons of different disciplines would be held at the Anna Stadium here on October 5, says the Collector, K.Nanda Kishore, in a press release. Sportspersons in kabbadi, kho-kho, football, volleyball, weightlifting and athletics could participate in the trials. Those selected would qualify to participate in the State-level selection for representation in national-level competitions. Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 113.49 feet today. The inflow was 9,341 cusecs and the discharge, 22,945 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

Undertrial held

ERODE: The Dharapuram police arrested an undertrial escaped from the Madurai police custody in February 2005.

The Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan, on Thursday said that the Madurai police arrested Karuppiah (30) of Mudurai in a double murder case. While he was taken to Trichirapalli Judicial Court, he escaped.

On Wednesday night, during a vehicle check, the police arrested Karuppiah. He has been involved in 26 property offence cases and 20 non-bailable warrants are pending against him. - Staff Reporter

Students injured

NAMAKKAL: Nine persons, including seven students, of a private college were injured when the college bus in which they were travelling collided with a sand-laden lorry at Puduchatram here on Thursday. According to the police, the college bus was proceeding from Rasipuram to Namakkal with 52 students. The bus driver and the lorry driver also sustained injuries. The injured were admitted to a private clinic. - Staff Reporter

Disaster management demonstration

Nagercoil : Collector Sunil Paliwal inaugurated the disaster management (mock) demonstration in Agastheeswaram taluk on Thursday.

The revenue, police, fire service personnel as well the general public of Kovalam participated in the programme.

The Collector said that the people in the coastal areas were put to untold hardship after the killer waves, which hit the coastal areas on December 26 last year. Hence it was decided to educate the fishermen community on tackling nature's furies. — Staff Reporter.

Directive to hostels

Nagercoil : Collector Sunil Paliwal has directed that working women hostels run by various organisations should get the mandatory approval from the District Social Welfare Department.

Ganja seized, two held

Tuticorin : The police have seized ganja from different parts of Tuticorin district and arrested two persons, during the raids conducted on Wednesday. Altogether 2.5 kg of ganja was seized from the accused. According to the police, Murugesan, native of Nagercoil, was arrested while he was moving about at Kayathar with 2 kg of ganja and Arokiasamy was taken into custody from Tuticorin town. Both the accused were later remanded to judicial custody . — Staff Reporter.
