IIM-Ahmedabad attracts many offers

Special Correspondent

"The pre-placement offers are a recognition of IIMA's growing reputation as a business school"

AHMEDABAD: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, has begun the new academic year on a high note, with 38 students getting pre-placement offers. Seventeen others have been interviewed. They too are expected to get confirmed placements. A high percentage of the offers are from foreign companies, said P.K. Sinha, chairman of the IIMA placement committee.

The offers are based on the performance of students during the two months of internship at the end of the first year. The institution finalises the placements for the on-job training, conducted during the summer vacation, based on offers made by companies.

Offers from abroad

Deutsche Bank, London and New York, offered the post of analyst to all six IIMA interns it picked up in November 2004. Similarly, the London-based Lehman Brothers and HSBC accepted three interns each and Barclays Bank, Singapore, both its interns.

While the students still have about eight months to pass out, the pre-placement offers are an increasing recognition of the institution's growing reputation as a business school, Prof. Sinha said. The students executed assignments and were involved in live projects in all major financial markets including London, New York, Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo. "This is clearly an indication of the corporate world's acknowledgement of the quality and diversity of the IIMA."

The interns praised the vacation curriculum, saying it helped to equip themselves with practical applications of important financial tools and practices.
