Set up cells to deport illegal immigrants: High Court

Work out a methodology to ensure that only Indians find place in voters' rolls, Election Commission told

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed the Union Government to set up, on the Delhi pattern, monitoring cells in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram for detection and deportation of illegal Bangadeshi immigrants.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma directed the Election Commission to come out with a methodology to ensure that the names of only Indian citizens were entered in the poll rolls. The Bench pulled up the Commission for its "failure" in deleting the names of illegal immigrants.

Directing the Delhi Government and the Centre to file fresh affidavits within four weeks, the Bench said the Commission would be failing in its constitutional obligations if it did not ensure that the names of Indian citizens alone got into the rolls. "The inclusion of the names of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants has vitiated the process for free and fair elections,'' the Bench said. The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition seeking directions to the Delhi Government to deport illegal Bangladeshi migrants who, it said, had become a serious security threat in the capital.
