Work for new understanding: Paul Holloway

Special Correspondent

India and Australia could work within a framework, says South Australia Minister Chambers of Commerce and industry's cooperation sought to strengthen ties between the two countries

CHENNAI: : South Australia's Minister for Industry and Trade Paul Holloway on Thursday sought the cooperation and support of the Chambers of Commerce and industry to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Addressing the South India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), Chennai, Mr. Holloway said both the countries could work together within a framework of a new understanding in the backdrop of globalisation and the economic reforms in India.

Mr. Holloway, who was in Chennai as part of the six-member delegation led by the Premier of South Australia, Mike Rann, was confident that the visit would help to further cement existing ties. Responding to queries from importers, he agreed to look into their difficulties.

S. Ramanthan, SICCI Vice-President, said trade between the two countries had recorded 6.54 billion Australian dollars. The scope for expansion of trade between South Australia and Southern India, especially Tamil Nadu was immense. "What is required is not only exchange of information but visits of businessmen of both the countries," he added.

MoU signed

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce president, K.M. Mammen, with Peter Vaughan, Chief Executive Officer of Business SA, an Adelaide-based Australian trade association, for strengthening trade ties. It would provide for encouraging trade delegations, conduct of exhibitions and trade fairs in India and South Australia.
