S.Thirunavukkarasar
Results of local body elections in Kerala and Andaman and Nicobar Islands have come as a morale booster for Bharatiya Janata Party, which had been desperately searching for one in the last few months. An interesting aspect is that there is a Tamil Nadu connection to the "success" of the BJP in the two places. The party national secretary, L. Ganesan, is "prabhari" (in-charge) for Kerala and the former Union Minister, S. Thirunavukkarasar, for the Islands. Ever since their appointment last year, both have taken their jobs seriously. Mr Thirunavukkarasar's organisational abilities were in display when the BJP organised a "satyagraha" at Port Blair in September 2004 on the Savarkar issue. In fact, only a few days before the commencement of the national executive's meeting on September 16, Mr Thirunavukkarasar, also a member of the executive, came back to Chennai from the Andamans after canvassing for the party.

"Lotus (the party symbol) has started blooming in Kerala. We are all happy, after a long hard work," Mr. Ganesan quips, speaking to The Hindu from Ernakulam. T. Ramakrishnan
