Workshop to train teachers on child rights

Staff Reporter

49 persons, including members from NGOs, from 10 districts participated

CHENNAI: "There are three boys in my class, but they work at a hat-making unit and do not attend school regularly. They are 14 years old and there is no one in their family to guide them. So I thought by attending this workshop I will be able to help them," says a Corporation school teacher from Egmore, who participated in a workshop organised by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (Tamil Nadu) on Thursday.

Child rights

At the three-day regional workshop to train facilitators on child rights, 49 persons, including members from non-governmental organisations, from 10 districts participated.

Chandra Thanikachalam of ICCW talked about the legal provisions and acts pertaining to child rights.

According to ICCW's Ananthalaxmi, children are aware of violations but do not know how to protect themselves.

S. Thomas Jayaraj, director of the Centre for Child Rights and Development, said the State could enforce rights only if it was backed by legislation.

The workshops aim to spread awareness on child rights, and create a group of trained facilitators from all over the State to empower children.
