CHENNAI: The one-day strike called by Central trade unions on Thursday had little impact on normal life. Except for a few stray incidents of violence, the strike was peaceful. Three incidents of rail roko were recorded at Perambur, Avadi and Wimco Nagar (north of Chennai on the Chennai - Gudur section). The City Police said protesters attempted to block roads in 14 places. The police detained 3,900 persons, including some 550 women during the day.
Autos damaged
A couple of autorickshaws were damaged in T.Nagar and Anna Salai and stones were pelted at half-a-dozen MTC buses in Ambattur. A senior officer said but for these stray incidents, no major law and order problem was reported in the Greater Chennai police area.
AITUC members held
On Anna Salai, members of the All India Trade Unions Congress (AITUC) staged a road roko near the Periyar Statue to highlight their demand for change of economic policies of the Central Government. They were taken away by police. MTC authorities said that they operated 2,400 services in the city, more than the normal number. All the arrested persons were released in the evening, police said.
