`Aavanipoovarangu' to blend local, Kerala traditions

CHENNAI: The Confederation of Tamil Nadu Malayalee Associations is all set to celebrate Onam in Chennai on October 1 and 2.

`Aavanipoovarangu,' say the organisers, will be a blend of Tamil and Malayali traditions.

Head to St. George Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School on Poonamallee High Road to witness a theme park in tune with the festive mood. Poets would meet and `theyyam' artistes would add to the colour. More than 250 folk artists from both the states would perform. There will also be a public meeting, which will be attended by Kerala ministers M.K. Muneer and K.C. Venugopal.

The other dignitaries to be present include NORKA chairman M.M. Hassan, BSNL head K.B. Brahmadattan and actors Mohan Lal and Jayaram.

The festivities will conclude with a cultural procession in the evening featured by a visual extravaganza titled `Kerala Darshan,' a 300-foot-long canvas comprising thematic paintings by children.

The confederation president M. Nanda Govind said `Aavanipoovarangu,' which was in its seventh year, was for all Chennaiites.
