  • Account verification shows cashier had mismanaged money for five years

HYDERABAD: A complaint about theft of cash from the National Police Academy has brought to the fore an alleged fraud by its cashier on Thursday.

The Rajendrangar police on Wednesday received a complaint from NPA Line Inspector Nageswarappa stating that Rs. 1.47 lakhs had disappeared from the administrative block. A cashier D.A. Sastry reportedly kept the cash in a bag in an office almirah. He maintained that the almirah keys were intact but the cash was stolen. Rajendranagar ACP B. Narsimhulu said a police party checking the cashier's office stumbled upon a cover containing Rs. 2,000 concealed in a file.

Smelling a rat, the police party inspected the office and found Rs. 1,06,370, including 9,700 coins, hidden in different corners. There were also some cheques valued at nearly Rs. 40,000.

"After verifying account books, we learnt the cashier had mismanaged money for the past five years," the ACP said.

The cashier has not been taken into custody.
