NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday accused the Left of having called a general strike without any real issue.

"The Left is simply posturing ahead of the Assembly elections in Kerala and West Bengal," general secretary Arun Jaitley said here.

While the main "issues" identified by the Left were privatisation, disinvestment and dilution of labour laws, which would go against worker interests, the fact was that there was no move towards privatisation; disinvestment was virtually at a standstill and no one in the Government categorically talked about any change in labour laws.

The government move to disinvest up to 10 per cent of equity in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited was put on the back burner, as was modernisation of airports with private capital.

The irony was that in West Bengal, where the Left Front was in power, the Chief Minister said in public that he was in favour of 100 per cent foreign direct investment for modernisation of the Kolkata airport, Mr. Jaitley said.

When the BJP along with the Shiv Sena called a Mumbai bandh after the terrorist attack at Ghatkopar, the parties were fined Rs. 10 lakhs each by court. There should be some uniform yardstick, he said.
