`People's nod for LDF-DIC(K) ties'

UDF to look into poll results

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) president, K. Muraleedharan, today asserted the ties between his party and the LDF had got popular recognition going by the results of the local bodies elections.

Participating in a meet-the-press programme organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, Mr. Muraleedharan said that the LDF and the DIC(K) would take forward this relationship.

In reply to a question he said that he did not propose to take the DIC(K) back to the Congress. When asked whether he would return to the UDF, he said he did not propose to do that either.

In reply to a question, he said that the LDF-DIC(K) alliance had thwarted the BJP's attempts to make electoral gains. He said that the DIC(K) had been able to establish its presence in more than 1000 wards. His party's executive would hold it's meeting on October 5 to review the election results.

With regard to sharing of power in the local bodies, the regional leadership of his party had been authorised to discuss the matter with the LDF and take a suitable decision.

To study reasons

The United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan has said that the front would conduct a detailed study into the reasons for the defeat in the local bodies elections and take remedial measures in time for the Assembly elections.

In a statement here today, Mr. Thankachan said that the UDF accepted the verdict of the people. The ruling coalition did not get the time to prepare for the elections even though it had started taking fresh steps to strengthen the coalition after a phase of acute factionalism in the Congress.

The organisational shortcomings and the lapses in the voters' list and ward delimitation had affected the UDF's prospects.

The misunderstanding among certain communities with regard to the Government's functioning had also resulted in the defeat of the UDF, he said.

The election clearly proved which was the real Congress, Mr. Thankachan said and appealed to all those who had left the party to return to home.
