Jhuggi cluster demolished in Patparganj

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: In pursuance of a recent Delhi High Court order, the Delhi Development Authority on Thursday demolished about 500 jhuggis at Ramanand Camp in the Patparganj area of East Delhi. Three women residents were detained on charges of rioting.

The DDA demolition squad began the exercise amid heavy police presence on Thursday morning but faced stiff resistance from some women residents. The local Municipal Councillor, Shavitri Sharma, reached the spot around 11 a.m. and asked the DDA officials whether they had issued prior notice to the residents to vacate. According to the police, one of the women threw chilly powder into the eyes of an excavator driver, while some other women deflated a tyre of the other excavator.

Three women, including Ms. Sharma, were detained by the police and taken to the Preet Vihar police station. A case of rioting and obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties was registered against them. By late afternoon, 500 jhuggis were demolished by the DDA.

For her part, Ms. Sharma alleged that when she asked a DDA official for the demolition notice, she was pushed and beaten up. She alleged that she was forced into a vehicle and taken to the police station. "I sustained injuries in the right eye and head," said Ms. Sharma, alleging that it was only after Congress leaders rang up senior police officers of the district that they took her to a hospital for a medical examination.

Another demolition drive is scheduled to take place at the neighbouring Rajeev Camp on Friday, the police said.
