`Manmohan betrayed nation'

Kochi: The United Progressive Alliance Government headed by Manmohan Singh has betrayed the nation by deviating from its foreign policy of non-alignment, according to M.S. Jayakumar, Secretary of the Central Committee of CPI(ML) Red Flag. By voting along with the U.S. against Iran's atomic project, the Prime Minister had played a subservient role to promote U.S. policy, he said in a statement. — Staff Reporter

Cleaning programme

Kochi: The Janakeeya Powra Samithy and the Indian Oil Corporation, Ernakulam, will take up a mass-cleaning programme for a week. The programme will be held in connection with Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations. Voluntary organisations like the Red Cross, NSS, Scouts, Guides will also participate. V.R. Krishna Iyer will inaugurate the programme on October 2 at a function at Park Avenue, near the Gandhi Statue at 9 a.m. Important places, main roads, pocket roads, hospitals, beach, school campuses etc will be cleaned up. — Staff Reporter

Osteoporosis detection camp on October 1

Kochi: Krishna Hospital will be holding a free osteoporosis detection camp on Saturday. Excise staff stage protest

KOCHI: Members of several Central Excise associations staged lunch-hour demonstrations in front of Excise offices in the State to protest against the authorities' move to reduce the number of Excise range offices in Kerala.

In Kochi, the Joint Action Council of the associations took out protest marches at Central Excise headquarters and the Central Excise Bhavan.

JAC leaders said that the plan to cut the number of range offices by almost a half would affect the assessees as well as curtail the career prospects of the staff. They said the first week of October would be observed as a protest week. — Special Correspondent
