This Day That Age
Members of the States Reorganisation Commission signed their report on September 30. They met at the residence of the Chairman, Syed Fazl Ali, and affixed their signatures to two printed copies of the report, which was later handed over to the Home Minister, Pandit Pant. It contains about 250 pages and also a summary giving the recommendations. While the Cabinet may briefly glance through the recommendations, any major decision will be taken before the State Governments have had an opportunity of going through the report. A cell is being created in the Home Ministry to which key officers of the Ministry will be transferred for studying the report and taking action on it. Pandit Pant will assume the responsibility of implementing the report. The Commission, with Syed Fazl Ali, a former Judge of the Supreme Court, as Chairman, and Sardar K.M. Panikkar, former Indian Ambassador to China, and Dr. H.N. Kunzru, MP, as members, was set up on December 22, 1953. It took about 21 months to complete its examination of the whole issue of reorganisation of States and has now made its recommendations.
